1. Middle lane hogging is illegal
You must keep left unless overtaking. Staying in the middle lane unnecessarily can lead to a £100 fine and three points on your licence. It’s one of the most misunderstood rules of motorway driving.
2. You can’t stop on the hard shoulder—unless it’s an emergency
Stopping on the hard shoulder for a phone call or snack is illegal. It's strictly for breakdowns or emergencies. Even running out of fuel isn’t considered a valid excuse.
3. Smart motorways have specific rules
Red X above a lane? That means it's closed, and driving in it is dangerous—and illegal. Smart motorways also use variable speed limits, which are enforced by cameras. Make sure to stick to the correct speed limit shown to stay safe and avoid speeding fines.
4. You can overtake on the left—but only in specific situations
Known as 'undertaking', it’s only allowed if traffic in the right lanes is moving slower due to congestion. Otherwise, you must overtake on the right.
5. You need to take regular breaks
While not a legal requirement, driving for too long without rest is unsafe. The Highway Code recommends taking a 15-minute break every two hours.
