When Can You Cancel Your Car Tax?
You can cancel your car tax with the DVLA if:
You’ve sold or transferred your vehicle.

You’ve declared your car off-road with a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN).
Your vehicle has been written off by an insurer.
Your car has been exported outside the UK.
Or if your vehicle is now exempt from tax.
How to Cancel Your Car Tax in 3 Simple Steps
Notify the DVLA
Visit the official DVLA website or call 0300 790 6802. You then provide your vehicle registration number and logbook (V5C) details. If you’re declaring a SORN, you can do it online or by post.
Receive Confirmation
The DVLA will confirm the cancellation of your car tax. If you sold your car, ensure you receive confirmation of ownership transfer.
Get Your Refund
