The legal requirements for towing a trailer or caravan | Rooster
May 01, 2025

If you're planning a holiday or need to transport goods, understanding the legal requirements for towing a trailer or caravan is essential to stay safe and compliant on UK roads.

The first step is to check your driving licence. If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997, you're limited to towing small trailers unless you take an additional test (known as the B+E test). As of December 2021, the rules have changed slightly — most drivers are now allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass) without taking an extra test. However, it’s still wise to verify your specific licence entitlements.

Both your towing vehicle and trailer or caravan must meet certain safety standards. Essential checks include:

  • Proper working lights and indicators
  • Tyres that are correctly inflated and have sufficient tread depth
  • Correctly working brakes (for trailers over 750kg)
  • Secure attachment with a suitable tow bar
  • Displaying a clearly visible number plate that matches the towing vehicle

You must also use towing mirrors if your trailer or caravan obstructs your rear view.

Overloading is a common cause of fines and accidents. Make sure the total weight of your trailer and its load does not exceed the towing limit of your car. Additionally, inform your insurance company when you are towing, as it could affect your policy or coverage in the event of an accident.

Understanding the legal requirements for towing a trailer or caravan ensures you travel safely, avoid penalties, and protect yourself and other road users.
